Dringhouses' houses and roofs

Dringhouses was a rural medieval village strung along the road to Tadcaster, and it stayed outside the city boundary until 1937. City of York Council's character study describes the most common houses today as inter-war and post-war semi-detached houses with front and rear gardens, convex bay windows and hipped roofs. Alongside them are eighteenth- to early twentieth-century farmhouses and large individually designed houses – many of the older villas on Tadcaster Road are now guesthouses, hotels or offices – and infill and larger estates from the 1950s onwards, especially to the south of the village.

Tadcaster Road Conservation Area

The Tadcaster Road Conservation Area was designated in 1975. It follows the main road from The Mount through Dringhouses, and the council's statement picks out the linear form of the original village, the mature trees at the roadside and in gardens, the long views across the Knavesmire, and the large villas in their own grounds. The wider area has over twenty listed buildings, including the Grade I listed Goddards. If your home is listed or inside the conservation area, check with the council before changing a roof covering or chimneys.

Roofing problems we see in Dringhouses

  • Hipped roofs on inter-war semis – loose hip and ridge tiles, failed mortar bedding and worn bay-window roofs.
  • Mature trees – leaves and moss in gutters and valleys, and occasional branch damage after storms. See guttering.
  • Older villas – slate and chimney work on larger roofs.
  • Original tiled roofs – coverings that have done their job and need replacing. See roof replacement.
  • Garages and extensions – flat roofs ready for EPDM.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what we are asked most. Anything else, just ask.

The hip tiles on my 1930s semi are loose – do they need re-bedding?

Usually. Hip and ridge tiles on older roofs are bedded in mortar that cracks and washes out over time. We lift the loose tiles, clean them and re-bed them, or fit a mechanically fixed dry hip system where it suits the roof. We'll explain the options with your quote.

Trees overhang my roof on Tadcaster Road – what should I watch for?

Blocked gutters and valleys, moss holding moisture on the tiles, and branches rubbing or falling in high winds. Clearing gutters each autumn helps a lot. Trees in a conservation area are protected, so talk to the council before any pruning.

Do you cover Woodthorpe and Acomb too?

Yes – along with Dringhouses and the rest of south-west York.
