Strensall's houses and roofs

Strensall is a historic linear village beside the River Foss, north of York. In its old core, City of York Council's appraisal describes modest two-storey buildings of simple form in clamp-fired red brick, with tiled or slated pitched roofs and chimneys, set on long narrow plots with outbuildings behind. A small group of buildings by the railway forms its own conservation area. Later development to the south and west – much of it twentieth-century and modern – brought semis, bungalows and detached homes with concrete tiles, dormers and flat-roofed garages.

Strensall's conservation areas

The Strensall Village Conservation Area was designated in 1979 and extended in 2001 to include riverside pasture, West End and buildings along Princess Road. The separate Strensall Railway Buildings Conservation Area covers a small area on the eastern edge of the village, and neighbouring Towthorpe has its own. All three were appraised by the council in 2011 – see its conservation area appraisals. Changes to roof coverings, rooflights or chimneys in these areas may need permission.

Roofing problems we see in Strensall

  • Older brick cottages – slipped tiles and slates, verges and chimney repairs on the historic core.
  • Outbuildings – pantile and slate roofs on the long-plot outbuildings, often neglected until they leak.
  • Modern homes – dry-ridge and dry-verge failures, and leaking flat-roofed garages.
  • Exposure – the open ground around the village means wind damage to verges and ridges after storms. See emergency roof repairs.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what we are asked most. Anything else, just ask.

Can you repair the roof on an old outbuilding in Strensall?

Yes. Many of the village's long plots have brick outbuildings with pantile or slate roofs. They can usually be repaired by re-laying sound tiles on new battens and membrane, keeping their character.

Do you cover Towthorpe and Earswick?

Yes – along with Strensall, Haxby, Huntington and Wigginton.

My dry verge caps keep blowing off – why?

Dry-verge units rely on being fixed correctly to the battens and to each other. On exposed roofs, poorly fixed or older systems can work loose. We replace them with a properly fixed system, or rebuild a traditional mortar verge where that suits the house better.

Begin with a conversation.

Whether it's a slipped slate, a leaking flat roof or a full re-roof, tell us about it. We'll look at the roof properly, explain what we find in plain English and put the price in writing – free and without obligation.
