Poppleton's houses and roofs

Poppleton is two villages. Upper Poppleton is centred on its distinctive triangular village green, with groups of vernacular buildings and several eighteenth-century listed buildings. Nether Poppleton, closer to the River Ouse, has its historic core around St Everilda's Church – listed Grade II* and twelfth-century in origin – Manor Farm, Church Lane and Main Street. Both villages have seen extensive suburban development, so alongside the old brick, pantile and slate houses there are many twentieth-century semis, bungalows and detached homes with concrete tiles, dormers and extensions.

Poppleton's conservation areas

City of York Council designated both villages as conservation areas in 1993. The Upper Poppleton Conservation Area, extended in 2004, is valued for the rural quality of the green, its groups of vernacular buildings and the remaining rural setting. The Nether Poppleton Conservation Area takes in the church, Manor Farm, Church Lane and Main Street, and its relationship with the river. If your home is inside either boundary, check with the council before changing a roof covering or chimneys.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what we are asked most. Anything else, just ask.

Do you work in both Upper and Nether Poppleton?

Yes – both villages, plus Skelton, Rufforth and the rest of north-west York.

My house overlooks the green in Upper Poppleton – what should I check before re-roofing?

Whether the house is listed and whether it's inside the Upper Poppleton Conservation Area. Like-for-like re-roofing often doesn't need planning permission, but changing materials or adding rooflights may, and listed buildings need consent for work affecting their character. Check with City of York Council first; we'll describe the proposed work in writing to help.

Can you fix a leaking flat roof on a Poppleton extension?

Yes. We'll find where the water is getting in – often at an edge, an upstand against the house wall or an outlet – and either repair it or, if the covering has failed generally, replace it in EPDM.

Begin with a conversation.

Whether it's a slipped slate, a leaking flat roof or a full re-roof, tell us about it. We'll look at the roof properly, explain what we find in plain English and put the price in writing – free and without obligation.
