Haxby's houses and roofs
Haxby grew from a small farming village in the old Forest of Galtres into one of the largest communities on the edge of York. The historic core along The Village still has groups of two-storey brick cottages from the mid-eighteenth century onwards, mostly with clay pantile roofs, broken up by more imposing houses and short Victorian terraces that brought in Welsh slate and the occasional hipped roof. Local brick and tile works supplied some of the village's late nineteenth-century houses. Around that core are the large twentieth-century estates – inter-war and post-war semis, bungalows and later detached houses – with concrete interlocking tiles, flat-roofed garages and plenty of rear extensions.

Haxby Conservation Area
City of York Council designated the Haxby Conservation Area in 1977. It follows the historic village core, and the council's designation statement highlights the medieval village plan, the rural scale that survives along The Village, and the street frontages with their grass verges and white post-and-rail fencing. If your home is inside the boundary, changing a roof covering – swapping pantiles for concrete tiles, for example – or altering chimneys may need permission, so check with the council first. We're happy to describe the work in writing to help.
