Fulford's houses and roofs

Fulford has two quite different characters. Fulford Village, along Main Street, is a linear village of pinkish-brown brick houses, some of them Georgian, with roofs pitched towards the street and finished mostly in clay pantiles or, to a lesser extent, Welsh slate. Massive brick chimneys break up the rooflines, some houses have upstand gable walls, and there are almost no dormers on the street side. Closer to the city, Fulford Road is lined with Victorian and Edwardian houses and terraces, mostly slate-roofed. Around and between them is later twentieth-century and modern housing.

Fulford's conservation areas

Fulford has two appraised conservation areas: the Fulford Village Conservation Area, appraised by City of York Council in 2008, and the Fulford Road Conservation Area, appraised in 2010 (see the council's conservation area appraisals). The village appraisal specifically notes the clay pantile and Welsh slate roofs, the big chimneys and the lack of front dormers as part of the area's character – so matching materials and keeping chimneys matter here. Check with the council before changing a roof covering, adding rooflights or altering a chimney.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what we are asked most. Anything else, just ask.

My house on Main Street, Fulford is in the conservation area – can I add rooflights?

Rooflights facing the street are likely to need permission in a conservation area, and the Fulford Village appraisal notes the near-absence of front dormers as part of the character. Rooflights on a rear slope are less sensitive but still worth checking with the council. If the house is listed, consent will be needed.

Can you match the old pantiles on my Fulford roof?

Usually by re-using sound original pantiles on the most visible slopes and using carefully matched new or reclaimed clay elsewhere. We'll talk you through the options before work starts.

Do you work on Fulford Road's Victorian houses?

Yes – slate repairs, re-slating, chimneys, lead bays and valleys are common jobs along Fulford Road and the streets off it.
