Huntington's houses and roofs

Huntington was a small farming village of a few hundred people for centuries. Substantial growth began by the 1930s and then accelerated rapidly, so that by the 1980s it was home to well over ten thousand people. That history shows in its roofs: in Old Village, detached and semi-detached two-storey houses from the eighteenth century onwards in traditional brick, with pantiles and slate; and across the rest of Huntington, large areas of inter-war, post-war and late twentieth-century housing with concrete tiles, hipped bungalows, dormers and flat-roofed extensions.

Huntington Conservation Area

City of York Council designated the Huntington Conservation Area in 1991. It takes in Old Village through to the banks of the River Foss, with All Saints' Church – listed Grade II* and roofed in Welsh slate – and West Huntington Hall in their wooded setting. Four of Old Village's eighteenth-century houses are listed. The neighbouring garden village of New Earswick has its own conservation area. If you're inside either boundary, check with the council before changing a roof covering or chimneys.

Roofing problems we see in Huntington

  • Post-war and 1970s–80s homes – ridge and hip tiles working loose, worn valleys, and dry verges failing after wind.
  • Bungalows and dormers – leaking dormer cheeks and flat dormer tops. See leadwork.
  • Extensions and garages – felt flat roofs past their best.
  • Rooflines – sagging gutters and tired fascias and soffits. See guttering, fascias & soffits.
  • Older houses on Old Village – pantile and slate repairs matched to the original.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what we are asked most. Anything else, just ask.

My bungalow in Huntington has a leaking dormer – can it be repaired?

Usually. Dormer leaks often come from failed lead or felt on the cheeks and top, or where the dormer meets the main roof. We can renew the flashings and re-cover a flat dormer top in EPDM without replacing the whole roof.

Are concrete tiles from the 1970s worth repairing?

Often, yes, if the tiles and battens are sound and the problem is local. If tiles are porous, cracking and slipping across the roof and the underfelt has perished, a re-roof becomes better value. We'll show you the condition and explain.

Do you also cover New Earswick?

Yes – along with Huntington, Haxby, Strensall and the rest of north York.

Whether it's a slipped slate, a leaking flat roof or a full re-roof, tell us about it. We'll look at the roof properly, explain what we find in plain English and put the price in writing – free and without obligation.
